Sedation is a process used to establish a relaxed, easy and calm state through the use of oral sedatives. The technique is easy and requires no additional needles. Best of all, the medications create such a comfortable experience that most patients do not remember the visit; it is as if they slept through the treatment.

How does it work?

We gather information regarding your health and discuss with you your wants and desires. If you’re comfortable, we’ll take x-rays and look in your mouth.

It is critical that you provide our dental team with an updated health history including any medications you are on, including vitamins and supplements. Factors like smoking and alcohol consumption can alter the effectiveness of sedation medications, so be sure to tell us about any habits you may have.

We will then give you a prescription for a sedative to take the night before your first appointment to guarantee a good night’s sleep and to make sure you wake up relaxed.

When arriving for your first appointment a companion should bring you to the office. Additional medications will be provided to create the ultimate in relaxation. Our experienced dental team will monitor you throughout your entire visit.

Your companion should then take you home from your sedation appointment. The remainder of the day should be taken off, be sure to stay hydrated and drink lots of fluids. You should not drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours.

Sedation Options

ORAL CONSCIOUS SEDATION - Patients take a small pill about one hour prior to their appointment that induces a deep and relaxed responsive state.
Most of our patients hardly notice when the anesthetics are administered, and they often have little to no memory of their dental procedure. Any patient that is not in a very relaxed state will be given additional pills. The sedative effect generally lasts for several hours after the procedure.

NITROUS OXIDE SEDATION - nitrous oxide sedation or ‘laughing gas’ is a milder sedative that is administered at our office. It takes effect immediately, and provides a numbing effect, and wears off almost completely during the appointment but only after the local anesthetic is administered.

COMBINATION SEDATIONS - At McKenzie Dental, we are able to provide both Oral Conscious Sedation and Nitrous Oxide Sedation together in an effort to make your dental experience completely relaxing and stress free.

Advantages of Sedation Dentistry:
• Patient relaxation
• Increased comfort
• Movement control
• Patient co-operation
• Control of gag reflex
• Little or no memory of treatment
• Time saving - Fewer appointments needed
